Ryan Shipe

Wy’East (Grade 3 and 4) teacher

Ryan Shipe is now in his fourth year teaching. He is grew up in Lake Stevens, WA , the oldest of four children and son of a teacher and engineer. Ryan earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Willamette University, majoring in English and minoring in History. After spending a couple of years folding clothes in the basement of Nordstrom “finding himself,” he went back to school and earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Lewis and Clark College.

After graduating amidst the 2008 financial crisis, Ryan spent the next three years refining his craft and learning a lot about teaching as a substitute in Portland Public Schools.

This is Ryan’s first year at The Gardner School where he teaches Wy’East (grades 3 and 4). He loves to read (mostly fantasy and sci-fi), listen to music (The Rolling Stones and The Who; Bach and Mozart; Coltrane), make art (painting, drawing and photography), watch and care too much about sports (Mariners, Seahawks and maybe someday again the Sonics) and study history (especially European and US) and politics. He couldn’t be more excited to be teaching at such an amazing school!

Ryan’s girlfriend Sarah is the Director of Communications for the Girl Scouts of Oregon and SW Washington. They live in SW Portland with a little black cat.
