GARDNER SCHOOL CAMPS 2011

Below you will find the schedule for Gardner Camps 2011. A more detailed description of each camp can be found on pages 3 – 5. Camps run for one week, at the times listed, and run throughout the summer break. Parents can sign up for as many camps as they would like. With the exception of the two Mad Science Camps, registration and payment should be coordinated through the front office of the school.

CAMP DESCRIPTIONS

CAMP TITLE AGES CAMP DESCRIPTIONS
Green Week! 4-6 Welcome to Green Week! Campers will explore, observe, play and start saving the earth with five fun, environmentally-friendly projects including: milk carton bird feeders, two liter-terrariums, tin can herb pots, and more fun projects made from recycled materials. Let your green colors show!
Summer Olympic Games! 7-13 As we prepare for the upcoming Summer Olympics in London join us at The Gardner School for our own Olympics. Students will choose a country to represent as they compete in a variety of sports including track and field, ribbon gymnastics, fencing, soccer, basketball, badminton, golf, and field hockey. We will also go on a field trip to WSU to use their Frisbee golf course and walking path. Every child will leave camp a winner with an Olympic Medal. Bring your own lunch, snacks, water bottle, sun screen, and good running shoes.
Fun With Food! 4-6 Yes, kids can play with their food in this fun summer camp where they will bake bread braids and bread animals, create sand art from Kool-Aid, make castles out of sugar cubes, sculpt mountains out of mashed potatoes, and much more! Between projects, kids will enjoy water play, nature walks and classic summer games (both indoor and outdoor) at The Gardner School.
Fix It! 8-13 Learn how to use a variety of different tools and observe how to use more complex ones. Spend time working on projects around school and also make small things to take home.
Wonder and Wander! 4-8 One week of outdoor exploration in Gardner Garden and Wetlands and the WSU campus. Children will explore and create, navigate and investigate with lots of outdoor skill building and discovery.
Team Sports! 7-13 This is your chance to compete in a variety of team sports including hockey, basketball, soccer, softball, and track and field. An emphasis is placed on sportsmanship and teamwork. We will create a positive, supportive environment where students learn to play as part of a team. We will also take a field trip to the Parsley Center to swim and climb the rock wall. Every child will leave camp with a t-shirt. Bring your own lunch, snacks, water bottle, sun screen, and good running shoes.
The Great Outdoors! 4-7 Calling all Nature Explorers! Come to camp this week to investigate bugs, explore the wetlands, watch birds, and build structures. Campers will also conduct cooking projects, play games, read and act out stories, and create natural art. A week of outdoor fun for 4-7 year olds!
Fun with Spanish Culture! 7 and up Time for exploration of food, art, stories, dance, music, film and games from the world of Spanish! Embark on a tour of mountains, deserts, jungles, and tropical beaches, without needing to pack a suitcase or leave home! We will prepare foods from various regions, learn dances, songs, and stories, and discover new corners of the Spanish speaking world each day.
Rockets and the Science of Flight! – This camp is run by Mad Science Summer Camps 5-7 Space, rockets, planes and flight… a little bit of everything for a rockin’ good time. Younger campers will have a blast learning the hows and whys of aerodynamics by studying all things that fly: planes, kites, hot air balloons, helicopters and of course, rockets.
High Adventure! 10 and up This camp is only for the adventurous! We will take 5 day trips each filled with excitement and summer fun. We will spend one day at Lewisville Park hiking, swimming, playing games and exploring. Another day will be spent in downtown Portland playing in the fountains and then swimming at Sandy’s house. Another day will be at Mt. Hood Adventure Park riding the alpine slides, jumping on the bungee trampoline and playing in the batting cages. We will also take a trip to the beautiful Oregon coast. Finally a rafting trip down the rapids of the Deschutes River. We are scheduled from 9am-5pm, but the rafting day will go longer and we also need to allow for traffic, etc. Phone calls will be made to parents to coordinate any late pick up times.

Rocket Lab! – This camp is run by Mad Science Summer Camps 7-12 3, 2, 1 Blast Off this camp is rockets, rockets and more rockets! Build and launch a rocket everyday as you learn all about, you guessed it, rockets! We are in for an action-packed week focused entirely on rockets and the physics of rocket flight. Campers learn the importance of teamwork in launching rockets and have the opportunity to try their hand at each role.
Build, Create, Explore! 4-7 Building, creating, and exploring, Oh My! Campers will bake/cook, create art, hike, construct with Legos, K’Nex, other manipulatives and cardboard, solve challenges, sing songs, listen to stories, work independently and in groups, and most importantly learn while having fun. Let the festivities begin!
Animation Nation! 7-13 Learn the basics of stop motion animation, writing storyboards, and creating your own Clay-mation and Lego-mation movies!
Summer Fun! 3 year olds This camp is for both new and returning Mazama students. This is a wonderful way to get acquainted with the classroom environment and the outside play area or enjoy the opportunity to return to Mazama one after a summer break. It is also an opportunity for your child to make new friends with potential classmates. We will have lots of fun with a variety of activities such as water, sand, bubbles, treasure hunts and so much more. Let the fun begin!
Wonders of Water! 4-7 There is no better time to enjoy the water than during August in Washington. Campers will explore properties of water, hike to a nearby creek, tramp through our wetlands, play in the sprinkler, sing songs, make snowcones and create projects and art. Campers will even have the opportunity to build a miniature snowman and observe what happens in the summer heat. Let’s get wet!
Color Explorers! 6 and up Campers will spend the week exploring the wonders of COLOR! They will get a chance to paint with hot and cool colors, create colorful collages, tie-dye wild t-shirts, and more!
Fun Start! 3 year olds This is a camp for new Mazama students. Join the Mazama teacher, Gayle LaHusen, for a week of great fun. This is a wonderful way to get acquainted with the classroom environment and the outside play area. It is also an opportunity for your child to make new friends with potential classmates. We will explore art, sing songs, read books, tell stories, go for walks, cook and much more.
